This new book on coins of the Kings of France from 1461 to 1610 (Louis XI to Henry IV) is the perfect complement to the familiar book of the same name that covers the period from 1610 to 1792.
For this new work, the traditional method of classification of the Gadoury books is maintained: The coins are classified by reigns, chronologically, and then, within each reign, they are arranged from the lowest face value to the highest. The logical order of metals is respected with copper (from Henry III onwards), billon, silver and gold. The types are illustrated at their actual size and includes their technical specifications: metal and purity / the official weight / the diameter. A rarity index is provided in the type, ranging from common "C" to "R5," Including R1, R2, R3, and R4. Generally, a rarity index of R5 indicates a coin seen in 1 or 2 examples, R4 for 3 to 5 coins, etc. up to C for a common coin. Only coins of which the existence has been confirmed at least one example has been seen for sale are listed. A hyphen "-" indicates no price, for lack of sufficient data to do so: many coins R5 are for example known only with one specimen. When prices are given, it is in up to three grades, fine, very fine, and extremely fine.
An important section is an illustrated list of moneyers and their marks arranged by mint.
Each coin is cross-referenced with its catalog number in the books by Duplessy.
