The Budapest University of Technology and Economics, abbreviated BME, is Hungary’s most significant tech university and is considered the world's oldest institute of technology with university rank and structure. It was founded in 1782 when Emperor Joseph II established the Institutum Geometricum as part of the Faculty of Liberal Arts at the University of Buda. The Institutum, the direct predecessor of the BME, was the first in Europe to award engineering degrees to students of land surveying, river control, and road construction. More than 110 departments and institutes operate within the structure of eight faculties. About 1,100 lecturers, 400 researchers and other degree holders and numerous invited lecturers and expert specialists participate in education and research. Approximately 1,400 of the university's 21,171 students are foreigners, hailing from 50 countries. The school issues about 70% of Hungary's engineering degrees. 34 of its professors and researchers are members of the prestigious Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Courses are provided in five languages: Hungarian, English, German, French and Russian. On February 16, 145 students from 35 countries received their degrees at the graduation ceremony of BME’s English-language programs.
