Hungarian Nobel Prize Winners: György Békésyi (1899-1972)

Born in Budapest and died in Honolulu 50 years ago where he was professor of sensory sciences at the University of Hawaii, won the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 1961 for his work on the human auditory system and his discoveries related to the physical mechanisms of the stimulation of the inner ear, the cochlea. He used strobe photography and silver flakes to show how a membrane in the ear moved like a wave when stimu-lated by sound.
The obverse shows travelling sound waves within the cochlea in the inner ear and indications of sound wavelength from 200 up to 20000 Hz.
