The Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma is the cradle of Hungarian Christianity and one of Hungary’s key spiritual centres. Its renowned school can look back on a history of 1,000 years, and the Archabbey also houses one of the world’s largest monastic libraries. The monastery was found by Grand Prince Géza in 996 in honour of Saint Martin of Tours. The church consecrated around 1003 burned down several times during the first few centuries, and the current church had to be rebuilt three times due to historical events. According to written records, the present church was erected and consecrated 800 years ago in 1224. Aside from a few short historical interruptions, the monastery has continuously been the home of Benedictine monks for 1,028 years, and the uniquely preserved, 800-year old medieval church is still used for prayer by the monks even today. The Archabbey was declared a national memorial site 10 years ago in 2014.

Front: The front of the current coin shows an excerpt of the Charter of the Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma in the centre field, surrounded by an outer ring. On the right side of the front, interrupting the outer ring, is a depiction of the statue of Saint Maurus of Pécs sculpted by Géza Stremeny, which is found on one of the pillars in the St. Martin basilica. The compulsory design elements: the inscription ‘MAGYARORSZÁG’, the value numerals ‘3000’, the mint mark ‘BP’ and the mint year ‘2024’ are also on the obverse.

The coat-of-arms of the Hungarian Benedictine Order is located at the bottom on the back, partially extending into the outer ring, with the master mark of Balázs Bitó to the right. The outer ring on the back bears the legend “PANNONHALMI BENCÉS FŐAPÁTSÁG” and “NEMZETI EMLÉKHELY” (Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma and National Memorial Site), separated with the emblem of the National Memorial Sites.
