Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands is celebrating! From October 27, 2024 to October 27, 2025, the city is celebrating its birthday. And that is starting with the launch of a commemorative coin, one of only two authorized by the Ministry of Finance every year.
750 years Amsterdam: from quiet town to vibrant metropolis
The first time the name Amsterdam is encountered, in the form of Amestelledamme, is on October 27, 1275. It is a small village that is located at the banks of the Amstel River, with a very favorable position for trade. In 1275, Amsterdam officially received the toll privilege: this is seen as the birth date of the city. From 1300, when Amsterdam officially got its city rights, the city really started to grow. The occupation of Antwerp by the Spanish in the 16th century and the industrialization were two major reasons Amsterdam had the chance to grow into the metropolis that it is today.
The jubilee year “Amsterdam 750” is celebrated in a big way in both 2024 and 2025, in the countdown to the big birthday on October 27, 2025. There are many events and initiatives in and around Amsterdam. Past, present, and connection are three of the most important pillars of the city’s anniversary. With the commemorative coin, these pillars are emphasized.
Design of the coin
The 750 year Amsterdam coin is designed by Hans Gremmen. The collaboration between past and present is visible on both sides. On the obverse, King Willem-Alexander is portrayed. He was drawn by the artist in a way that is like how former Dutch Monarchs were portrayed on coins.
The reverse consists of two parts. One half of the coin has the image of an old branding tool from 1350 with the Amsterdam city coat of arms on it, believed to be the first time the city coat of arms was used. This half of the coin also has a more matte finish. The other half contains modern typography, which has been used to write the text “750 jaar (years) Amsterdam” and the years 1275 – 2025. This half of the coin has a shinier finish. Both parts come together by using the three crosses from the Amsterdam Coat of Arms in the middle of the reverse.
