György Oláh was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1994 for his achievements in the study of positively charged hydrocarbons and his contributions to carbocation chemistry. The significance of Oláh’s discovery was that it was possible to demonstrate the existence of the previously postulated carbocations and to study their properties. His achievements in the field of carbocations and other cations provided the theoretical basis for new, more modern hydrocarbon chemical processes. In addition to developing the understanding of structural chemistry, the study of unusually structured cations had several practical implications. Thanks to their discovery, it was possible to develop higher-octane unleaded forms of petrol, which – thanks to their more economical production costs – facilitate the reduction of global warming and also provide solutions to the production cost problems of traditional fuels. The methanol economy formulated by Oláh offers a real alternative to promote the greening of the energy sector, transportation and the chemicals industry.

Front:This oval-shaped coin is the 10th piece in the series of collector coins celebrating Nobel Prize winners of Hungarian descent, and the imagery used follows the thematic concept of this series. One side of the coin bears a portrait of the Nobel laureate with the legend “NOBEL-DÍJ” (Nobel prize) and the date it was awarded, while the other side presents the research and results for which the scientist was awarded the Prize. In keeping with the thematic idea of the series, the central motif on the front of “György Oláh ” coin is a 3D model of a typical, stable carbocation, which was at the heart of Oláh’s research. The front has the mandatory elements, such as the legend “MAGYARORSZÁG”, the mint mark “BP.”, the date “2024” and the denomination “3000” and “FORINT”.

Back:The back features a half-profile portrait of Oláh presenting the cycle forming the basis for the operation of the methanol economy, with chalk in hand. This motif alludes to Oláh’s work as an educator as well as the field of study that he pursued after winning the Nobel Prize, in which he earned the title of the “father of the methanol economy” as a researcher. To the left of the portrait, in two lines is the legend “NOBEL-DÍJ 1994” (Nobel Prize 1994), with his name “OLÁH GYÖRGY” in a legend to the right, following the curve of the oval. The coin was designed by sculptor Mihály Fritz, whose master mark is found at the bottom right.
