The Netherlands and the Art of Painting The work of Dutch painters is both timeless and world-renowned. They are the highlights in art museums across the globe and some have sold for millions. From the realism of the masters of the Golden Age such as Vermeer, Frans Hals and Rembrandt, to Van Gogh’s legendary post-impressionism, and on to the modern school exemplified by Piet Mondrian, the small nation of the Netherlands leaves an imprint on the art world second to none and is the focus of the first coins of 2011.
Dutch law requires the portrait of Queen Beatrix to appear on the obverse of every legal-tender coin allowed to circulate. Rarely has this been so cleverly accomplished as here, where she is seen looking at a cityscape as if in a museum. The reverse depicts an exterior view of the same scene.
