The Golden Age of Rembrandt On the occasion of his 400th birthday, 2006 was celebrated in the Netherlands as the Year of Rembrandt and the nation is honoring the master with a special series of coins and medallions. Among them were these legals tender 5 and 10 Euro coins. Rembrandt was considered the greates Dutch painter of the Golden Age. His touch with light and shade, use of bright colors, and feelings for humanity are evident in all of his work. The coin is the design of Berend Strik, who based his effort on a self portrait of the artist at the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague. He used embroidered stitching in the portraits of both Queen Beatrix and the artist, which he applied to lasered photographs.
