Hungary. 3,000 Forint 2012. London Kayaking. Silver Proof

$49.50

Canoeing and kayaking were introduced at the Berlin Olympic Games of 1936 and have been a part of the quadrennial program ever since. From 1936 to 2008 a total of 582 gold, silver, and bronze medals have been awarded. Astoundingly, the athletes of Hungary have won a total of 71 of them (19 gold, 27 silver, and 25 bronze), 16 more than the second place Germans. The USA has 16 in total.
With London calling in the summer of 2012, the National Bank of Hungary is saluting this feat of athletic dominance with a pair of legal tender coins: a gold one for canoeing, and a silver one for kayaking.
This silver 3,000 forint coin by Balázs Bitó shows two views of the doubled-bladed paddle used in kayaking on the obverse with the same legends as on the gold coin, while the reverse offers a glimpse of three women kayakers in competition.
Proof versions of the 34 mm, .925 silver coins are limited to 5,000 pieces.
