200th anniversary of the birth of Otto von Bismarck The German politician (*1815, Schönhausen; †1898 Friedrichsruh) has gone down in history primarily due to his appointment as the first Imperial Chancellor of the German Empire in 1871. Bismarck was instrumental in shaping Germany’s interior and foreign policy with the comprehensive social security system he developed (comprising accident and sickness insurance and a retirement pension scheme) and the strategic alliance systems he forged.
